The Science & Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is an art and a science that began over 5000 years ago in India. It is a science because its effects are measurable and reproducible. In ancient times, yoga was only practiced by a few elite. It was an oral tradition that was passed down from teacher to student. Yoga developed over thousands of years through practice, observation and meditation.

The practices of yoga were more recently written down and codified in the “Yoga Sutras”, by Sri Patanjali- (a scholar, sage and physician). “Sutra” is a word for aphorisms, or threads. The aphorisms that were given to us by Patanjali are guidance along the path of yoga. These threads were written down and have been expounded upon by teachers throughout the ages. Now there are many translations of the Yoga Sutras. I particularly like the translation of Swami Satchitananda, as it is concise and simple to read.

The “Yoga Sutras” give us guidance for practice and are also a map of the psychology of the mind. The science of yoga beautifully addresses our mind, body and spirit. Since Patanjali’s time, yoga has changed a great deal and it has become quite popular in the west. Yoga was brought to the United States in the early 1900’s. One of the most notable yogi’s who made this art accessible to westerners was Paramahansa Yogananda- who wrote the book,” Autobiography of a Yogi”.

There are many benefits of yoga practice. We now have research to demonstrate this. In fact, many local hospitals are now offering yoga programs specifically because of the health benefits that a regular yoga practice provides. Some of the benefits include:

Balancing of the hormonal system
Improved immune function                          Reduced Stress

Lower blood pressure                                             Better circulation                                           Increased strength

Increased balance                                                   Increased flexibility                                       Overall well-being

There are many types/ styles of yoga now a days and ANYONE can practice some form yoga. It is a myth  that you have to be flexible, or in” great shape” in order to practice yoga. When practicing, remember to always listen to your body and go at your own pace. Find a teacher that is qualified and feels right to you. A regular yoga practice can go a long way in helping you live a happy, healthy and harmonious life.
